Overview
What is it?
It seems strange that the car that kicked off BMW’s obsession with gigantic SUVs should ever seem so lost in the company’s vast line-up, but what started in 1999 as just the X5 has now spread to encompass a whole mirror range of BMW’s conventional models from 1 to 7 and even with a few extra electric cars thrown in, the iX and iX3.
It’s not just the BMW range that’s crowded…
In its day the X5 was a revolution. Just before the last century ended, the original X5 became the first ever ‘off-roader’ that behaved like a car on the road, and now the German firm is onto its fourth generation of the car. Where that primordial X5 went, the Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, et al have followed. This is busy territory.
Introduced in 2018, the X5 made the switch to BMW’s modular longitudinal platform and received a thorough overhaul. The engines and transmissions remain familiar, but even they got comprehensively tweaked.
Isn’t the X5 supposed to be matched to the 5 Series?
Difficult to forget, looking at it, but it’s worth remembering that the X5 is now rather a large car, with an optional third row of seats. The real replacement for the early X5 is today’s X3 – a better everyday choice for family life, in all honesty.
So the X5 is bigger and plusher than ever, comes with four-wheel drive only (so at least it isn’t one of those clueless soft-roaders then) and benefits from all-round air suspension. This not only helps off-road clearance but means better cornering and comfort on the road. Four-wheel steering is a cost option across the range if you want an X5 that’s more agile.
Tech-wise, the X5 gets BMW’s fanciest driver assistance set-ups and the requisite digital dashboard. In deference to its girth, all the parking help you could need comes as standard, while there are all sorts of gizmos available to spec on top if you want. You can pile up your order sheet with heated cupholders, waving your foot to open the boot, a fancy Bowers and Wilkins sound system, TVs in the back, massage seats up front and actual laser headlights. But you can’t shoot anything with them, sadly.
What engines are available?
There are five engine options for the X5 – 40i and 50i petrols, 30d and 40d diesels and a 45e PHEV petrol. All of them are BMW’s latest 3.0-litre in-line 6cyl modular engines. The petrols pump out 328bhp and 523bhp respectively, the diesels 282bhp and 335bhp, while the 45e manages a combined 282bhp from its powertrain. This means 0–62mph times of 5.5–6.1secs variously, unless you’re in the M50i and you should hold on to your hat at 4.3secs.

What’s the verdict?
BMW has got to know SUV buyers well, and has built a really solid entry. The basics are right. It’s competent, and you don’t have to spend a pile on options to get a desirable spec. You just have to bear in mind that driving an SUV this large comes with a certain image – you could just lean into it and go for the raucous M version, or try and appease onlookers with the vaguely more eco-friendly plug-in hybrid.
Whichever X5 you go for, they’re all superbly powered and great to steer notwithstanding our reservations about the four-wheel steering. It actually will go off-roading too, which can’t be taken for granted in this class.
The cabin is roomy and comfortable and offers reasonable accommodation for seven if you want, but did it have to be this flash?

Thought that BMW’s first SUV couldn’t off-road? Well, think again.
If you think about it, the E53 X5 is one of the most important BMWs ever produced. It was the company’s first SUV, and, arguably, the car that blew the door wide open for the whole SUV boom. Back in 1999 it was the most fashionable thing to be seen in on the school run and pretty much never went off-road. Primarily because it wasn’t all that competent at it. But that’s never enough to stop the Russians.
Just check out the video above for proof. See, with first-gen X5s hitting rock-bottom prices (or worse, the scrappy) the chaps from the AcademeG YouTube channel picked up a battered example and set to work on it to make it mud-pluggable.
Obviously, they chopped off the roof first. Because Russia. But then they went around with great precision and care hacksawing whatever they could, popping off all the airbags (nobody wants a face full of dusty airbag off-road), before jacking the ride height up and smashing the body panels with a big hammer until some oversized, chunky tyres fit under the battered arches. Then, because they’re safety conscious types, they welded a flimsy roll-cage in. We guess they must have run out of time to sand down the sharp edges. But you know the rules: keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times.
As you can see from the video above, what they actually created was genius as this X5 can actually go off-road. Like properly off-road. AcademeG, we doff our caps.

В таком случае, в отличие от увешанного катализаторами и прочими приблудами для повышения экологичности БМВ, один из моих моторов (5.7, карбюратор, никаких катализаторов), можно сказать, работает на покромсанных пандах:)

An X5 xDrive 45e? What’s that all about?
According to BMW, this plug-in hybrid is the X5 for all your needs. Which is a bold claim.
What they mean by ‘all your needs’ is it can genuinely reduce your real use of fuel, not just look good in the official figures, because it has a decent electric range.
And it can genuinely do long journeys because they managed to keep a decent size fuel tank. Plus it has a full-fat six-cylinder engine so it serves up enjoyable Munich performance. Finally it has the same cabin and boot space as the normal X5.
That’s a pretty good list, because most PHEVs have some or all of a too-small battery, and a too-small tank, and a too-small wheezy downsized engine, and a too-small boot.
How’s that work?
As to how it all fitted in without staging a land-grab from the people or the boot, then you’ve got to assume there’s loads of wasted space in the regular X5. Guess that’s why it’s so bulky.
This 45e plug-in hybrid sandwiches an electric motor between the petrol engine and the autobox. So even when driving in electric mode, it’s still all-wheel drive.
The piston engine is a 286bhp petrol 3.0-litre. The e-motor makes 113bhp, the latter enough to still keep up with suburban traffic, but not exactly scoot out of dual-carriageway roundabouts. Mash the throttle to combine those two and you have 394bhp, at which point scooting is very much on.
OK, some eco-numbers please.

The battery is 24kWh (which was the same as the first-generation all-electric Nissan Leaf). That’s big for a PHEV. It’ll take the X5 slightly over 50 miles WLTP – at least if it’s not on optional oversize wheels.
As aways with a PHEV I’ll give the official consumption and CO2. They’re 235mpg, and 39g/km. But as always I’ll say they’re meaningless – in the real-world it depends on how frequently you plug in, because the grid energy isn’t accounted for in the official figures.
Some real-life context. I got about 36mpg on a 100 mile town-and-country trip, including draining the battery. Imagine you did 100 miles commuting, plugged it in every night, you’d get something similar. If you plugged it in at work too you might get away with using no petrol at all during a week’s commuting of 50 miles each way.
How does it feel?
It doesn’t just drive on electric til the battery’s flat, then go to petrol. Few PHEVs do. It uses whatever power source is best for efficiency at any given moment – usually petrol for heavy power, electric for gentler stuff. And of course it can regenerate.
It also takes into account the navigation, so it’ll save some battery power if it knows you’ve got some town driving at the end of your trip, and use the petrol out of town. So it’d try harder to use electric power for a high proportion of a short journey, but allow more petrol earlier on in a long trip. It aims to arrive at the end with a flat battery.
The transitions between p, e and p+e are super-smooth and to all intents and purposes unnoticeable. If you watch the rev-counter, you’ll be amazed how often the engine cuts out.
You can of course force it to behave differently. What I’ve described is ‘hybrid’ but there’s also ‘electric’ (stops the engine from starting until the battery is flat) and ‘sport’, which keeps the engine on.
What about the old pleasures?
It can deliver there: the engine is sweet-voiced and strong, aided in its torque and urgency by the motor. How does 0-62 in 5.6 sec sound?
Sounds OK… But I do the questions. Is it much different from X5s in other ways?
Nope. A plush if slightly brash cabin has lots of room and equipment. A chassis with standard air springs makes a good job of most surfaces. The steering is fluent for a big heavy SUV. The optional 4WS system has been recalibrated since the cars we criticised at launch, and is now more natural. The front grilles ain’t getting any smaller though.
A sensible way to save fuel then?
It’s an odd world where we’re told a 2.5-tonne SUV is a green choice. For most of us, getting a smaller car and packing a bit lighter is a better answer. But if living it large with performance and space is non-negotiable for you, then possibly. That said, you absolutely must have the discipline to keep plugging it in overnight.
