With amazing titles like the Persona series, Ys series, and Star Ocean series, the PSP surely have a great collection of RPGs.
If you’re a fan of both PSP and RPGs, I know that you want to know the best PSP RPGs of all time.
Most of you will recognize (or even still playing) some of the games mentioned on this list.

#25. Justice League Heroes
After Braniac raids STAR Labs vaults while distracting Batman and Superman from his plans, the League then stops the villain from launching nuclear missiles target Metropolis among other cities.
All of this activity was meant to distract them from one rogue missile fitted out with space faring upgrades and aimed at Mars so as to free the White Martians from captivity and begin their invasion of Earth.
Snowblind Studios’ use of the Justice League property (with all of its iconic characters and even those lesser known sorts) is absolutely astounding in this solid, well-executed role-playing game that does justice to the League while also presenting a compelling game and an implausible if not gripping story.
#24. Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony
The narrative continuation of Dungeon Siege 2, Throne of Agony features the devastated world of Aranna as a new force arises to challenge one of three destined heroes who are fated to be the world’s hero.
The conflict with a mysterious enemy known as the Black Druid devolves into an unraveling conspiracy about a shadowy group of beings bent on extending their reign—or chaos—across the world.
You choose one of the three heroes on offer to take on the Black Druid in 2006’s RPG from SuperVillain Studios.
Leveling as you go, your hero can also take on a companion to help with the combat.
Focused on story and an immersive environment, Throne of Agony is a worthy successor to the modern classic Dungeon Siege 2.
#23. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 – Innocent Sin
Eikichi is trying to convince Tatsuya to join his band so he invites him and Lisa to a rehearsal where an argument ends up in a revelation of each character’s personas—and a warning from Philemon about events back in the realm of Sumaru.
The group then plays a game with a mysterious figure known as the Joker who is able to grant one wish but are trapped by a crystal skull that drains them of their hopes and dreams.
They then must find out who this Joker is and reclaim their “Ideal Energy.”
Fans of the Persona series of JRPGs will find a lot to love in Innocent Sin, a game that continues the traditional battle system seen in others of this genre but which involves a storyline that is unique and compelling.
There’s a lot of grinding, but it is all worth it to see the resolution of the central mystery that is central to the game.
#22. Star Ocean: Second Evolution
Taking place some twenty years after the original, this game’s main character is known as Claude C. Kenny, a new ensign for the Earth Federation.
He and his friend Rena eventually find themselves facing off against forces unleashed by a meteor strike an a group known as the Ten Wise Men that control the planet Expel.
Classic JRPG action and a storyline that is good but complicated for someone who knows nothing about the series, Second Evolution is a game that shows just how serious the PSP was about bringing mainline experiences over to the portable.
A great, if grindy, JRPG that remains compelling because it of its solid mechanics.
#21. Star Ocean: First Departure
An enhanced remake of the original Star Ocean, 2008’s TOSE masterpiece introduces gamers to the universe of Star Ocean and its inhabitants on the PSP with a traditional story about a small village boy becoming vital to the survival of the universe in the vein of a grand epic.
Roddick, Millie, and Dorne eventually find themselves swept up in a conflict between the Federation and a shadowy group working from behind the scenes.
Working as an introduction to the vast Star Ocean universe, this enhanced version on PSP maintains the feel of the classic game while giving it a fresh coat of paint.
A solid game from beginning to end, the first Star Ocean is also a study in streamlined narrative and gameplay.
#20. Brave Story: New Traveler
A story following friends Tatsuya and Miki who find themselves wrapped up in a strange tale one day after Miki is struck with a mysterious illness and Tatsuya is instructed by a voice in his head on how to save her life.
Game Republic’s 2007 JRPG for PSP is one of the weirder—even meta at times—games for the system.
It begins with Tatsuya playing a PSP (so much so he doesn’t even notice Miki’s collapse beside him) and ends with the typical JRPG fare you’d expect from a good manga or anime.
Gameplay is party based and traditional but encourages replay value with the Epilogue feature that allows access to the full game roster of characters at any time.
#19. ClaDun x2
Light on story and heavy on action, ClaDun x2 is a Tolkien-esque world of sword and sorcery combat with a light if forgettable background story that is definitely second fiddle to the rest of the game’s features.
A hack and slash epic with randomly generated dungeons and a leveling and class system—what more could you want?
With ClaDun x2, not much more as it is one of the best games ever made on the PSP for fans of action-packed RPGs.
#18. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
You and your friends begin playing a game called Persona which summons a gateway to the realm of Philemon and a world completely different yet distinctly tied to our own.
A traditional JRPG system is used as the launch pad for a Jungian psychological narrative that has few parallels in the genre.
If you’ve never played a Shin Megami Tensei game before, Persona might the place to start.
There’s little to complain about with this game other than the fact that it is starting to show some signs of age but, aside from that, the story is really awesome and the gameplay never presents a barrier to the enjoyment of that.
#17. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
A decade after its subjugation by the Erebonian Empire, the Liberl Kingdom finds itself on the eve of a celebration but also the center of a ton of conspiracies.
You and your party are tasked with unraveling the mysterious threats to the Queen and saving the day.
Utilizing turn-based combat on a grid system, Trails in the Sky is most evocative of a tactical JRPG but has the mechanics of a traditional party-based role playing game.
The battle system is accessible but also incredibly deep which makes it ideal for people who both want to enjoy the story and those who want to squeeze out every last drop of fun from the game.
#16. Crimson Gem Saga
The interestingly named Killian von Rohcoff finds himself the recipient of a twist of fate while on the quest for an ancient artifact that promises more than he perceives.
A traditional turn-based RPG with a unique “ambush” system that is based upon how a player encounters a monster tile, Crimson Gem Saga doesn’t do a lot to change up the JRPG formula but absolutely knocks it out of the park when it comes to the quality of writing.
#15. Cladun: This is an RPG
A girl and a boy go to an ancient gate that they believe is the passageway to the Arcanus Cella, a magical world beyond their own.
Named Pudding and Soma, the pair find themselves transported to the magical world and tasked with exploring an auto-generating dungeon and encountering new characters along the way.
The game is more about exploring and fighting than it is the story that is introduced.
That said, Cladun has some of the most addictive gameplay you’ll ever find in an action RPG.
This is made all the more accessible and addictive through the PSP form factor.
Ideal for a pick up and play or a long gaming session, Cladun is perfect for gamers that need something substantial for a portable.
#14. Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Adol Christin and his friend Dogi travel to Felghana, Dogi’s hometown, and discover the townspeople are under a dark and evil threat that requires Adol’s assistance.
The Ys series swings back and forth between being heavy on stats or heavy on equipment management but The Oath in Felghana actually does a good job of preferencing action above all else.
If you want a deep, epic story with some pure action RPG gaming, The Oath in Felghana largely strips away the tedious parts of a JRPG and presents a nice, streamlined experience instead.
#13. Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure
Parin moves to Tiese town after her parents are sent overseas to work and, sadly, finds out from her new guardian (her grandfather) that there are no other children in the town.
This all changes one day when Parin sees a child being attacked by a dog and saves it only to discover that the child is actually a monster.
To thank Parin, the monster shows her a gate to a world filled with monsters who need Parin’s help to stave off an invasion by mysterious shadow people.
This is a 3D action RPG with real time combat.
That means movement and attacks are all happening simultaneously and this makes Gurumin both different and challenging.
If you want something different, look no further.
Aside from the amazing graphical presentation and tight gameplay mechanics, Gurumin’s compelling, fairy tale-like story stands out among a sea of high school sagas and epics.
#12. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Odin’s servant Lenneth is awakened and tasked with gathering the einherjar for the coming of Ragnarok or the end of the world and a battle for the ages.
This game defines replay value.
Aside from is beautiful graphics and awesome story, the mechanics at work in Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth are reminiscent of the best JRPGs on classic systems like the SNES.
With 24 playable characters, Lenneth is never going to be short on content—especially considering that some of those are only obtainable through the very difficult mode of the game.
#11. Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
Alex is inspired by the dragonmasters of history and wants to become one himself as the world of Lunar begins to confront mysterious evil forces bent on harming the children of the goddess Althena.
A classic from the era of the Sega CD, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony is a remake of the original title and retains a lot of its classic trappings.
This means turn-based combat that wouldn’t be foreign to a 16-bit Squaresoft RPG and music and story that also falls in line with that era.
A charming tale buoyed by gameplay that is hard to dislike, Lunar’s remake is worth a purchase on the PSP.
#10. Ys Seven
Adol and Dogi arrive in the capital city of Altago but are quickly embroiled in a local controversy when they intervene to defend a lady’s honor from the dragon knights harassing her.
They are thrown in the dungeons of the city but eventually released because of their renown as adventurers—but also because they are desperately needed.
Rather than use the strict elemental system of games past where certain element types determined what could hurt or not hurt certain monsters, Ys Seven’s much more flexible maximum and minimum damage system make the action crisp and quick.
The saga of Adol and Dogi might not be for everyone, but this gameplay is hard to dislike.
#9. Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman
After Demon General Darkdeath Evilman captures the Super Baby, he is challenged by Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger in a battle whose outcome will determine the fate of the Earth itself.
As the synopsis probably reveals, there’s a lot going on here and not all of it makes sense.
For one, the story is out there but the gameplay is centered around one guy exploring dungeons that are generated at random—somewhat like a Roguelike but without all of the pressure attendant to that genre.
#8. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Zack Fair, the inspiration behind Cloud’s transformation from average foot soldier into the hero we know and love, is at the center of this Shinra-heavy narrative that sees the elite SOLDIER agent beginning to question the motives of the company he works for as well as watching the unraveling of none other than Sephiroth before his very eyes.
Without a question the single best spin-off game in the FFVII universe to not get a release outside of its primary system, Crisis Core is a must-play title for fans of FFVII and a great game otherwise.
It not only has a unique roulette style battle mechanic but it is also the beginning of the more action-oriented, 3D combat that the series debuted in FFXV.
#7. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
An attack on the Avengers by Dr. Doom and the Masters of Doom leads to the formation of a pan-Marvel team of heroes to confront the imminent threat posed by these super villains.
A great RPG in that it makes each and every playable character feel unique and different, Ultimate Alliance also rocks a really cool story that seems like it was ripped directly from the pages of the comics themselves.
#6. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Thrust into a world filled with monsters the size of buildings, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite tasks the gamer with finding and felling the epic beasts of the world.
The Monster Hunter series is like an action, hack and slash RPG for gamers that love to take down huge enemies but don’t need a lot of reason to do so.
Like the name implies, you hunt monsters and that doesn’t require an epic narrative. Expect to lose hours of your life on this PSP title.
#5. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Set ten years prior to the first game, this title shows how Master Xehanort manipulated events that led to the eventual sagas that upended the Disney universe.
It is hard to fault anything in the Kingdom Hearts series and this is the case with Birth by Sleep.
More like “Death by Lack of Sleep,” from its charming and inviting story to its absolutely addictive gameplay mechanics, this action RPG really shows you how Square does great things when they break away from the Final Fantasy formula.
#4. X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse
The Brotherhood of Mutants and the X-Men come together to rescue Professor X and end up discovering that they are both mutually threatened by none other than Apocalypse, the genocidal maniac that believes in the survival of the fittest.
Again, what makes these games so fun is that each mutant or character feels so unique from one another that the mixing and matching of party members becomes as much fun as the game itself.
Probably one of the better X-Men stories to be written, Rise of Apocalypse features the unique conceit of uniting enemies with good guys and throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the mix when it comes to quality and execution.
#3. Tales of Eternia
Reid Hershel is working to stave off the end of time—an event called the Grand Fall—and he must work together with his partner and friend Meredy to discover what an ancient war has to do with what is coming.
Gameplay trumps all things in this title and that is the charm of Tales of Eternia.
Do not come here expecting fancy graphics, but you will find an addictive, if sometimes opaque, RPG mechanical system running it all.
#2. Half-Minute Hero
Story doesn’t figure prominently in this sensation captured in thirty seconds that takes inspiration from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games as shown on the 8-bit NES.
If you like quick action and strategy, Half-Minute Hero is your deal.
An indie sensation that has grown into a full series on its own merits, Half-Minute Hero is about classic turn-based action and presentation and it is a charm that does not wear thin.
#1. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable
Taking place in the company city of Iwatodai, Persona 3 explores the effects of the Dark Hour on the city and what means for its inhabitants.
Most people transform into coffins at night while a select group do not and are awake to explore the transformed night city that exists between the other world and our own.
Persona thrives off of a combination of classic RPG mechanics and deep, involved stories.
That’s definitely what we get in Persona 3, a game for the ages and a touchstone for many fans of the series.
